Drums West by Jim Henson

Wonderful paper cut animation! Hope you enjoy this stop-go experiment by Jim Henson as much as we did! You can see him working at the end of the video. It is one of several shorts he made in his mid-twenties, inspired by the music of jazz great Chico Hamilton. This one is synced to “Drums West”. It makes you want to go grab all the color papers in the house and cut & collage. Imagine if Matisse made a paper cut animation!
We also recently watched Being Elmo (a treat – Elmo love!) and enjoyed spotting Jim Henson in it.

Check out the Jim Henson Company Youtube channel – it’s a treasure trove if you’re a fan!

    • It’s fantastic, isn’t it! Such a simple technique but the labour (and talent!) transforms it into magic!

  1. Wow! Jim Henson was my childhood hero, yet I never had seen this… how wonderful! Such a beautiful video, but I imagine it must’ve been so tedious! Would like to give this a go myself. Thanks for sharing!
