People! Meet a clown, spy, heroine, hypnotist, goddess and a tight-rope walker all and many more are in this beautiful book People by Blexbolex.
We bought this book first because of the wonderful illustrations in a retro silk screen print style, with the lovely over lapping effect and limited colors. We were happily surprised by the rich and unusual content! It’s a fabulous book.
There are 208 pages of people engaging in all sorts of activities, with different appearances, roles, jobs … real and imagined, with only a short description on top of each, juxtaposed on the left and right of the spread. The coupling of different people is designed to provoke questions and discussion. The relations are sometimes clear, sometimes vague, surprising and witty.
You’ll see a biologist and an astronomer, a painter and a tagger, an eccentric and a legend, bystanders and a risk-taker, an astronaut and a day-dreamer … so many people!
Some say the book is not for everybody because it also includes a slave, executioner, amputee, corpse, a migrant in a miserable situation for example. Those that you don’t normally see in children’s picture books, that reflect the diverse, minority and sometimes dark reality of the world. We think if children are at certain age and are not afraid of facing and questioning these topics, it will only add to learning and expanding their minds.
There are over 200 different people illustrated and juxtaposed in beautiful and thought-provoking ways, so be ready for hundreds of questions and endless story-telling if you’re introducing it to a curious child.
The book is beautifully made in great reproduction of original screen prints. Oh and the cover folds into a poster too!
